Infant Hip Dysplasia
What is hip dysplasia?
Hip dysplasia relates to abnormal development of the hip during fetal life, infancy or childhood. The hip bone itself may not fit as it should within the joint socket or in more severe cases it is dislocated. If your baby is diagnosed with hip dysplasia, there are a numerous treatments available and these should be discussed with your paediatrician.
How common is hip dysplasia?
Hip dysplasia affects approximately 10 in every 1,000 babies. Although this statistic may not seem significant to some, parents who have to deal with this condition are faced with many daily challenges.
What should I do if my baby is diagnosed with hip dysplasia?
It is most likely that your child was checked by a paediatrician in the first week of his/her life for hip dysplasia and he/she may have had a scan to detect whether hip dysplasia is in fact present. If this is the case and your child has confirmed hip dysplasia, he/she is likely to be monitored closely over the next few months or years by appropriate medical specialists and he/she may receive treatment such as a hip brace. It is important that you attend all your baby's check ups and follow the advice of your child's medical specialist.
What problems might I encounter if my baby is in a hip brace?
Nappy changing, car travel, prams, baby carriers, breastfeeding, sleep settling and clothing can be major stresses for parents of babies with hip braces. This is due to the brace holding the baby's legs apart in what can be described as a rigid "frog-legged" position. With time, patience and practice, these obstacles can be overcome and Hip Babes aims to ease the pressure by bringing you tips from real parents who have been through the same problems!
